I read a timely article last week in Florida Realtors that supported what I recently told a seller about smoking and the value of his home. A survey of Ontario real estate agents and brokers, sponsored by Pfizer Canada, found that smoking in the home could potentially lower the value of property up to 29 percent. Regardless of the survey, this is truly common sense. Indoor smoking, especially to non-smokers, leaves a lingering and distinct stale odor in a home that is quite offensive and difficult to eliminate. Smoker hotel rooms and rental cars are frequently avoided, so it stands to reason that a smoker’s home will turn many buyers off and lower the value of the property.
