Salumeria 104 – Authentic Northern Italian Cuisine

Salumi

Midtown has a winner in Salumeria 104.  Although it’s not a new restaurant, friends introduced me to it last night and I’ll surely be returning.

The concept is based on the Italian trattoria and neighborhood shop that serve up specialty cured meats and delicacies, also known as salumi shops.

As we walked in, large wooden boards were being served everywhere, piled high with gorgeous cured meats. We chose the Piccola Selezione – a salumi board  with Prosciutto San Daniele, Soppressata, Bresaola, Speck and SalameThe Speck was my favorite – a lean and smoky prosciutto.

Polenta Fritta

We also shared Polenta fritta, crispy squares of lightly fried polenta that were wonderful and a great accompaniment to the salty and complex prosciuttos.

All of these cured meats called for robust red wine.  They serve their vino Italian style, in short tumblers.  One bottle of Nero D’Avola (Colosi Sicilia) and one bottle of Primitivo (Cantele) were each $25.

All of their pastas are homemade with the exception of the spaghetti.  I adored them all but the group favored the Pappardelle al Funghi, a spinach pasta with porcini and oyster mushrooms.  This dish was delicate, simple and devine.  The Ravioli del Salumiere was filled with prosciutto and ricotta and sautéed with butter, sage and scamorza cheese.  I was surprised how much I loved it.  Loved it!  But if you want traditional and classic on a cold winters night, Salumeria’s Tagliatelle Bolognese will please you enormously. They cook up a terrific meat sauce and serve it on house-made tagliatelle,  al dente, of course.

Tiramisu and Almond Cake

Desserts of Tiramisu (check out the extra cocoa) and Almond Cake served with vanilla ice-cream were also impressive.

Seating is indoor or out with a Midtown vibe and prices are very reasonable.  Most pasta dishes are between $14-16, unless you include shaved white truffles.  The service by Gustavo was friendly and attentive, such that I will request his station next time.

Salumeria 104 is located at 3451 NE 1st Ave.  Miami, FL
